My White Sands

Dunes, Trees and Shrubs

Parabolic Dune

Parabolic dunes are one of the four dune types in White Sands.

Because of the vegetation on them, parabolic dunes move slowly, and generally advance fewer that five feet a year.

Rio Grande Cottonwood in Sand

This cottonwood is being overrun by the shifting dunes.

This cottonwood is growing at the edge of what was an open patch of underlying desert. The narrow remains of that interdune patch can be seen behind the tree.

The cottonwood cannot grow fast enough to keep its leaves above the swelling dune.
